The San Diego Union-Tribune recently showcased one of our illustriously imaginative ‘tooning teachers, Benjamin Black of Hilltop Middle School… or as all of you ToonTube addicts might know him: Adaptations. His class recently created a series of cartoons on Newtons Three Laws, one of which we’ve included above.

We reached out to Benjamin after the article to ask if he’d share his thoughts on using Toontastic in the classroom. Here’s what he had to say:

“Toontastic is a great tool for assessing student understanding of more complex theory and topics.  I have used Toontastic in the classroom to give students an opportunity to be creative, have fun, and demonstrate their true understanding of topics such as Newton’s Laws.  The skills necessary to create an animated short demonstrating the mastery of the topic being covered require higher level thinking and can be used to help others in class understand the topic better when shared.  This is also a fun activity for students and the teacher and once the students become familiar with the program they can create a new animation in minutes.  Apps like this make the iPad an amazing addition to the classroom!”

One year ago today, we launched our beloved Toontastic into the App Store to see if kids might be interested in creating and sharing cartoons using the iPad. Fast forward 365 days: hypothesis CONFIRMED!

Over the past year, kids and kids-at-heart have played for a cumulative 28 years, creating over 600,000 cartoons in 100+ countries around the world.

One of the many new features in Toontastic v1.51 is our new In-App-Purchasing system for schools. We hear from a lot of teachers using Toontastic in the classroom that In-App-Purchases are difficult – it’s just too troublesome and costly to purchase every new playset on all 30 iPads. Teachers: WE HEAR YOU!

With v1.51, all purchases are now tied to your ToonTube account, which means that (paired with our current “Birthday Bonus” pack), you can now purchase ALL CURRENT AND FUTURE playsets for the ENTIRE CLASSROOM for $9.99. We ask/recommend that you create one account per classroom so that teachers can monitor their students’ activity appropriately (and to help us pay the electric bill).

Here are the Steps:

1. Update all your iPads to Toontastic v1.51
2. Create one ToonTube account for your entire classroom.
3. Ensure that all of your iPads are online and logged into your ToonTube account.
4. Purchase the “Birthday Bonus” pack on one iPad.

With restart of the app, every iPad logged into your ToonTube account will have EVERY character and setting we offer. We’ve heard a number of reports that the v1.50 update is causing a crash for users installing the app over an old build (though not for new users). We’re sorry for any frustration this has caused and our crack team of code-gumshoes is hard at work sleuthing out the problem.

In the meantime, PLEASE DO NOT UNINSTALL TOONTASTIC to install a fresh version as this will erase your kids’ cartoons and we certainly want to retain those great memories.
