We had a swashbuckling time making pirate cartoons at 826 Valencia to kick off our Story Drive on Wednesday. Head over to 826′s website to learn more about their mission and like us on Facebook to see the photos and be the first to hear about future Launchpad Toys events!

What’s better than storytelling? PIRATE storytelling! And what’s better than pirate storytelling? Pirate storytelling for a good cause! So… for the next two weeks, we’re partnering with the writing workshop (and Pirate Shop) 826 Valencia to A) host our Toontastic Treasure Tales Contest and B) sponsor storytellers in their creative writing workshops through sales of Toontastic: All Access.
Here at Launchpad, we believe that…
- By encouraging kids to create and share stories, they’ll become more adept content producers and consumers.
- Through active and engaging play, kids will gain the confidence and composition skills necessary for the classroom and beyond.
- By helping children to develop creative storytelling skills, we’ll inspire them to become thoughtful content creators in our 21st century society.
If you feel the same, we think you’ll really like 826 Valencia – which is why we’re donating 50% of proceeds from Toontastic: All Access during this Story Drive to support 826′s ongoing efforts to provide all youth with the opportunity to become active content creators in this world of storytellers.
Next Saturday, December 15th, we’re partnering with the Children’s Creativity Museum in San Francisco to host Storytelling Workshops for you and your kids. We’d love for you to join us!

Can’t wait to see you there!
We’re very excited to announce that the Launchpad Toys Crew will be leading a storytelling and animation workshop on Saturday, July 28th at the Union Square Apple Store in San Francisco. Please stop by if you’re in the area – we’d love to meet you and make some cartoons with you and your kids.
The workshop runs from 3PM-4PM and we’ll be talking over the finer points of storytelling (Story Arc, Character, Emotion, etc.), making a couple cartoons, and showing off your best work to the crowd. Don’t forget to bring any questions you might have about Toontastic or suggestions for new characters/themes/features!
We can’t wait to see you next Saturday!
It was a wild week here at Launchpad Toys Galactic Headquarters. We were quite tickled to be invited to the LAUNCH Education Conference as one of 30 “Top Education Startups”… and then thrilled, humbled, and honored to be awarded by the conference judges as “Best Overall”.
Most exciting, however, was that we had the chance to preview our next app – MonkeyGram – a playful messaging tool for the iPhone that lets you create and send cartoon messages to your friends over Facebook, Twitter, email, and text message! PandoDaily featured the app today in their review of the “Top 5 Innovative Kid-Centric Startups“.
When I worked in the Toy Industry, we spent a lot of time figuring out ways to convince Mom (yes, Mom) to purchase our product. We figured we had about 20 seconds in-aisle to sway her to buy Playskool over Fisher-Price, Spiderman over Batman. At $10, $20, and $30 dollars per toy, Mom was buying one or the other – a classic Zero-Sum game. The only way to get more pie for yourself was to steal it from your competitor.
Working through the business side of Launchpad Toys, we’re often asked who our biggest competitors are… which gives us pause. I can rattle off any number of apps or developers in our space, but we don’t actually think of them as competitors. At $.99 on a $500 platform, Moms AND DADS (praise be!) aren’t choosing one app over another – they’re buying EVERYTHING they can get their hands on. Our biggest hurdle as developers isn’t overcoming our competitors, it’s rising above the noise of the App Store and convincing parents to hand over their phones and tablets to their kids!
We stand at a critical juncture in Children’s Media: Competition or Collaboration. As developers, we can either continue to operate as individuals competing over the same small sliver of pie or we can work together to champion best practices, promote one another’s work, and build the ultimate platform for fun, engaging, and empowering children’s media. At Launchpad Toys, we choose Option B – and like many other developers each May we celebrate that choice with a pilgrimage to the Dust or Magic AppCamp in Monterey, CA to work with other developers to realize the incredible potential for mobile platforms to change how kids play, create, share, and learn.
So batten down the hatches ye scalawags and landlubbers, we’re on the lookout for Tip Top Pirate ‘Toons! Send us your best yarns today to email@example.com and we’ll share them on this here blog in da ‘morn. Yo ho ho and a bottle of Yoo-Hoo!
Drumroll please… We’re very excited to announce today our 1st Annual Golden Monkey Awards celebrating the best kid-created cartoons across five categories: Most Playful Cartoon, Wildest Imagination, Top Drawing and Animation, Fantastic Foreign-Language Film, and Best Story. Vote Today! Awards will be presented Sunday February 27th (yes, the same day as another, far less animated, awards show).
11 months ago this week, Thushan and I shipped out to New York to participate in Startl’s Mobile Design Bootcamp and kickoff our then yet-to-be-named fledgling startup. It was a manic, challenging, and oh-so-rewarding week for us and the start of a great relationship with the Startl team that has been instrumental in helping us to get Toontastic and Launchpad Toys off the… um, launchpad.
This past week, Startl announced their second annual Start-Up Accelerator Program and we thought we’d take a moment to share the news with all you aspiring education innovators out there! Applications are available now (deadline: March 16th). Shock the System? DO IT!
We’re very excited to announce that Launchpad Toys will be hosting Digital Cartooning Workshops at Zeum: San Francisco’s Children’s Museum on December 4th and 11th. During these 1-hour workshops, children ages 5+ will be able to create and share their own cartoons using Toontastic, our soon-to-be-released iPad App.
We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Drumroll please… This Saturday, we’ll be unveiling our first digital toy at Maker Faire 2010! It’s called Toontastic and it’s a storytelling and animation tool for the iPad. For those interested in stopping by to get your annual dose of steampunk shenanigans (retro-futurism wha?), we’d love to show you our (very preliminary) work to-date and maybe make a cartoon or two. Kids Welcome!
